The New Year starts with Strauss Concerts in the Finlandia Hall

The festive tradition of the Strauss Concerts in the Finlandia Hall on January 5 at 7 pm and on January 6 at 2 pm makes a joyful start to the New Year.
The charismatic and charming professor Atso Almila conducts the Sibelius-Academy Symphony Orchestra and together they bring joy and the first feelings of spring of the year.

The dance performances during the Strauss concerts are done by the talented choreographer Ville Valkonen and Ballet Finland.

Atso Almila

is the professor of the orchestra- and the conducting education at the Sibelius Academy. In addition to being an internationally respected conductor, he is also a composer, columnist and opinion leader. Almila has composed not only operas but also symphonies and a lot of other music.

Angelika Klas,

soprano performs for the first time at the Strauss Concerts at the Finlandia Hall. Klas is a charismatic and excellent soloist who has made a brilliant career both in Finland and abroad. She has performed at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, at the Helsinki Festival and in various opera and operetta productions both in her home country and at many Opera Houses abroad.

George Stevens,

baritone is this year’s South African guest artist, performing at the Strauss Concerts. For years, he has performed throughout Europe in various Opera Houses and of course also at the Opera in Cape Town, which is his hometown. Stevens comes straight to Helsinki from the Bremen Opera where he performs in December. In addition to his vocal career, he is also the head of the Opera department at the Music College at Cape Town University (UCT).

Heikki Halinen,

tenor captivated with his voice the Strauss audience last year in the Finlandia Hall. He took up his music studies again as an adult and he has quickly become a sought after soloist. He debuts next summer at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Chaplitsky’s role in Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades.
